Does your dog need a sleeping bag?
Bringing your dog camping and hiking can be an amazing experience that builds lasting memories. I often bring my 7-year-old Labrador “Q” hiking with us because when she’s hiking she’s truly living her best life. Last year we went backpacking in late September in Kootenay National Park and it got quite cold at night. I had brought Q’s parka and a blanket for her to sleep on in the tent. Well at around 10 p.m. I reached over to check on her and realized she was shivering. I felt so bad, with tears welling up I woke up my partner and told him that we needed to give our dog one of our sleeping bags. So we took my sleeping bag and put it under Q and wrapped her nicely in it. I checked on her multiple times that night (as I was a bit cold sharing one sleeping bag) and she was toasty warm and snoozing. This very tragic (to me) situation could have been avoided if I had bought Q her own dog sleeping bag! Upon doing some research I have found some good ones.
1) The GOAT: Ruffwear Highlands Dog Sleeping Bag
I love Ruffwear. I feel like everything they make as been made with intention and durability in mind. The Highlands Dog Sleeping Bag is no exception. This bag is lightweight and compressible and comes with a compression bag. A medium bed weighs only 725g and a large at 997g, its easy to bring this bag along on camping and backpacking trips. It is one of the few bags to come in different sizes, largest bag being 72cm x 110cm (28.3in x 43.3in) should accommodate most dog sizes. It has a clamshell opening, allowing your dog to crawl in without feeling contained, while still trapping the heat inside. The bag itself is filled with synthetic down for amazing insulation and has a water-resistant outer shell. The sleeping bag can be washed in the washing machine in cold water on a gentle cycle. Ruffwear also sells a matching sleeping pad for the extra cold days. The Ruffwear Highlands Dog Sleeping bag is currently $107.95 CAD ($86.36 USD)
2) The one size fits all: The Wilderdog Sleeping Bag
The Wilderdog Sleeping Bag comes in one large size 92cm x 71cm (36in x 28in) which should fit most dogs and weighs in at 821 grams. It also has a synthetic filling and water-resistant outer shell, making for easy cleaning. This bag has a 3/4 zip which allows you to open up the bag to make a larger blanket which is handy. The sleeping bag has a nice wide opening, making it easy for dogs to get in and out of. I really like the different color options and the Wilderdog sleeping bag has a lifetime warranty! Wilderdog also states that for every purchase they donate a pound of kibble to rescues in need. As a rescue foster home myself, this is very touching :) Wilderdog also states that the bag is washing machine safe on a cold water gentle cycle. This bag is a bit cheaper at $84 CAD ($59.00 USD).
3) The up and comer: The Rocky Moutain Dog’s Yukon Dog Sleeping Bag
The Rocky Mountain Dog is a small Canadian company striving to put out quality products for the outdoor dog. The Yukon Dog Sleeping Bag is a lightweight, compressible sleeping bag with a fleece inner lining and a waterproof outer shell. This bag comes in one size (114cm x 79cm or 45in x 29in) which should accommodate most dogs. This bag can also be unzipped to use as a larger blanket. One thing The Rocky Mountain Dog has listed is the comfort temperature -7C to -5C and extreme temperature -10C ratings. This is similar to how human sleeping bags are rated and it can give you peace of mind knowing that your dog will stay nice and warm. This bag is also machine washable. The Yukon Dog Sleeping bag is currently on sale for $70 CAD ($56 USD).
Dog sleeping bags are the best way to keep your pup warm at night, give them a comfy spot to lie during the day, or even just a cozy blanket for at home. These lightweight, compressible bags are perfect for camping and backpacking adventures. They are conveniently all machine washable for use over and over again.
